My Social Dilemma
2 things collided for me recently that has left me with a dilemma. ⠀
I am committing more time to my social networking accounts and participated in a challenge over on another social media account to increase engagement. ⠀
Yes I am online more, posting more, using stories and getting more interaction BUT my time on social has skyrocketed and then I watched The Social Dilemma (Netflix 2020).⠀
The Social Dilemma confirmed to me what I already suspected. The fulfilment I experience from using social media is transient, distracts me from my real life and often leaves me vacant and empty.⠀
As a coach who aligns deeply with evidence-based coaching, positive psychology and all the great work neuroscientists do to show us how our brains work I am completely at odds with myself. ⠀
How do I share all my wonderful thoughts, learning, knowledge and beliefs without becoming a slave to social?⠀
As a coach who has to date grown my business through real human connection, coffee chats, reputation and direct client referrals where do I best spend my time? ⠀
On real human connection or as a product of Social Media?⠀
The Social Dilemma explains if you are not paying for the product, you are the product.⠀
The nature of social media creates unconscious habit-energy but do you know how much conscious energy to overcome unconscious energy is required? ⠀
To unravel and undo that is a huge task. I know because as a coach I work with unconscious behaviours all the time.⠀
Our brains have not evolved to have 10,000 people approve of us.⠀
Ivy-League educated psychologist, internationally renowned speaker, and addiction expert Dr. Nicholas Kardaras states 'I've worked with hundreds of heroin addicts and crystal meth addicts, and what I can say is that it's easier to treat a heroin addict than a true screen addict.'
I encourage you to look at your own usage, increase your self-awareness and that one step of metacognition will help you make informed choices. ⠀
So in true coaching style, I will be asking myself these questions.⠀⠀
By saying yes to growing my Social Media following, what am I saying no to?⠀
By saying no to growing my Social Media following, what am I saying yes to?⠀
I love being here on social but how do I do it on my terms and still make it work?
